Self-assessment can be a blessing or a curse. And why so? Well, it’s easy to get caught up by a fast-moving, competitive environment, assume you’re not doing as well as everyone else, and don’t, frankly, have the chops. That kind of self-assessment gets you nowhere, but there’s a lot of it going around.
Then, there’s the more compassionate form in which you acknowledge your shortcomings and yet are able to see that you may be doing better than you think. That’s the topic of a wonderful article by Lolly Daskal, the president and CEO of Lead From Within. In “12 Sure Signs You Are Doing Better Than You Think,” she takes aim at passivity, fear, and self-doubt (among other things) in a way I found genuinely helpful.
As she puts it, “It’s easy to feel like we’re not doing as well as we should, but sometimes we have to pay attention and measure our progress more objectively.” Here are her tips for getting to a more objective measurement, in her words:
- You learn from your mistakes.
- You seek new opportunities.
- You pursue your passions.
- You believe in yourself.
- You’ve mastered your mindsets.
- You keep trying.
- You embrace challenges.
- You face your fears.
- You care for your health.
- You help people.
- You’re free to do what you want.
- You’re not the same person you were last year.
These ideas are all simple to grasp but perhaps not so easy to put into action. We are all freighted with our own baggage and carrying it can slow us down immensely. Yet this simple list can be a blueprint for moving away from excuses and ahead with our lives.
This list lives next to my monitor, and I work on one of the principles a day. How would you do it?
